The 24th Poindexter Cup, an annual competition between junior girls in Maryland and Virginia, was held at Kenwood Golf and Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland from June 18-19, 2022. Each state selects eight girls to participate in the two-day match-play event. The girls representing Maryland were:

  • Alice Zou, Potomac, MD (TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm)
  • AnPhi Le, Frederick, MD (Youth on Course, MSGA)
  • Fannie Sukhumparnich, Bethesda, MD (MSGA eClub)
  • Irene Kim, Woodstock, MD (Youth on Course, MSGA)
  • Olivia Cong, Germantown, MD (Youth on Course, MSGA)
  • Megan Kirkpatrick, Woodbine, MD (Cattail Creek Country Club)
  • Michelle Yeung, Clarksville, MD (Hobbits Glen GC & Youth on Course, MSGA)
  • Sydnee Gaines, Middle River, MD (First Tee of Baltimore)

The 15+ mile per hour wind gusts certainly put the girls’ talent to the test this past weekend. After an opening round of four-ball matches on Saturday, Maryland and Virginia finished the day at 2.5 (VA)- 1.5 (MD). Three tight matches were halved, and Virginia’s Katie Park & Sue Lee were victorious defeating Maryland’s Fannie Sukhumparnich & Alice Zou (3&2).

On Sunday during the singles matches, team Maryland kicked it into high gear earning 5 of the 8 points up for grabs that day. Despite her loss in match play, Olivia Cong of Germantown, MD managed to knock in her first hole-in-one on hole number 6 that afternoon. Megan Kirkpatrick (3&2), Irene Kim (3&2), AnPhi Le (1up), Fannie Sukhumparnich (2&1), and Alice Zou (2&1) all secured a point for their home team during their match.

The final score from the competition was Maryland (6.5) and Virginia (5.5). This marks the fifth win for Maryland in this competition, and first consecutive win! Virginia now leads the series 18-5-1.
