As part of the MSGA’s centennial celebration over the course of 2021, we are recognizing some of the major historical events that took place over the last 100 years of our organization.
MSGA first officers (left to right):
M. Tyson Ellicott, President
R. Marsden Smith, Second Vice President
A.E. Marshall, First Vice President
The inaugural Executive Committee of the Maryland State Golf Association was made up of the following officers:
President: M. Tyson Ellicott, Baltimore Country Club
First Vice President: A.E. Marshall, Maryland Country Club
Second Vice President: R. Marsden Smith, Rolling Road Golf CLub
Secretary-Treasurer: Claude C. Madison
It is reported that Lieutenant F.L. Janeway of the Naval Academy Golf Club joined this group as a fifth member of the Committee, but he adopted no official title. While M. Tyson Ellicott held the distinction of founding President, and resided in that position in 1922 and 1923, it was his successor, R. Marsden Smith, who is remembered as the most versatile of its establishing members. As stated in an article that appeared in The Sun on February 21, 1932,
“Smith, son of one of the founders of Maryland’s first links organization, the Baltimore Golf Club, since has held every position in the State association and earned the praise of all its members for the zeal in its behalf for many years. He was the first champion of the old club, and therefore, the first golf champion in Maryland.“
