The Maryland State Senior Women’s Amateur Championship was held at Lake Presidential Golf Club on September 16-17, 2020. There was a championship division which included 40 competitors who played a 5,291 yard course, in addition to a one-day tournament for players age 70 and over which included 9 competitors who played a 4,893 yard course. The conditions were challenging for both divisions due to the amount of rain the Maryland region has faced over the past few weeks, but the weather was fall-like with overcast skies.
Kimbra Benson, from Leonardtown, Maryland had an incredible two-over-par 73 in the second round of the tournament, jumping from fifth place to first place to win the championship title. All competitors started on the back-nine at Lake Presidential for Thursday’s round, where Benson fired an even-par 35. Benson managed to edge out two past Senior champions, Bonnie Fry from Maryland Golf & CC (2005, 2016) and Sally Ratcliffe from the Elkridge Club (2017, 2019). The Breton Bay Golf & Country Club member has been in the hunt for the Maryland Senior title since 2018 when she placed third at Woodholme CC, preceding her runner-up title in 2019 at Kenwood Golf & CC. Benson is a two-time Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, earning those titles in 2010 and 2011.
