The 19th Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls’ Challenge matches took place at Danville Golf Club in Virginia on August 8-9, 2020. The Carolinas’ junior girls team defended their winning streak and would go on to claim their fifth consecutive victory. The Mid-Atlantic Challenge (MAC) is held annually and consists of Maryland and Virginia teaming up to compete against North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Maryland-Virginia team had a tough start on Saturday after the Carolinas team won all of their four-ball matches to give themselves a four point lead. On Sunday, the Carolinas team would only need two more points to secure the victory.
On Sunday, the first individual match was won by Emily Mathews of Mebane, North Carolina, who beat Melanie Walker of Fairfax, Virginia with a score of 7&5. The second individual match was won by Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina who was victorious in her match against Elizabeth Coffren of Owings, Maryland with a score of 5&4. The Carolinas squad went on to win four more matches and broke the previous Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge Matches record. They were on pace to surpass the 2014 Carolinas Team, who won 9.5 points against the Virginia-Maryland team that year. Molly Hardwick of Lexington, South Carolina, Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Alexia Siehl of Fort Mill, South Carolina and Chloe Holder of Anderson, South Carolina assured that by winning their matches Sunday afternoon.
On the brighter side of things, the Maryland-Virginia team came out Sunday and showed some grit by not falling for the compete shut-out and won two singles matches – Julie Shin from Brambleton, Virginia defeated Isabella Britt from Chesnee, South Carolina 2 & 1 and Jenny Hua from Boyds, Maryland defeated Abbey Schimpf from Daniel Island, South Carolina 6 & 5. The 20th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge is set to return to the Carolinas in 2021.
