The Maryland (MSGA) Junior Girls Poindexter team gave a valiant effort to try and take home the victory over the Virginia (VSGA) team at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Maryland but unfortunately came up short in their quest. Turf Valley Resort is home of two 18-hole championship courses, and the girls had the opportunity to play both the Original Course and the Hialeah Course. The two eight-player teams played a series of four-ball matches on Saturday as well as eight singles matches on Sunday. Point totals were allocated for the front nine, back nine, and the overall match itself.
The Maryland team had secured three points during the four-ball match segments on Saturday. Elizabeth Tucci and her playing partner Sophie Simon posted an excellent round of 65 by winning the last 2 out of 3 holes to come back and claim their match by a score of 2&1 against the Virgina team comprised of Emma Landis and her playing partner Amber Mackiewicz. The Virginia side obtained nine of the available twelve points on Saturday.
Danielle Suh and Isabel Bae, and Julie Shin and Sue Lee each won all three points available in their matches. Suh and Bae’s 3&2 win over Faith Choi and Jenny Hua included a 2&1 win on the front and a 1-up victory on the back. Shin and Lee defeated Emma Chen and Kayleigh Zeman 6&4, winning 4&3 on the front and 3&1 on the back.
On Sunday, Sophie Simon of the Maryland squad also secured a 2-up victory in her singles match against her Virginia opponent Melanie Walker. Maryland secured five singles points in the hard-fought battle of neighboring states. The event is slated to return to the state of Virginia next year.
