The Mixed Two-Ball Championship was held August 5 at Queenstown Harbor – The River Course. The location of the River Course on the Chesapeake Bay provided a beautiful setting for golf with nature aplenty. There was a huge population of baby deer to see throughout the course. The golf performance was stellar as well.
Our 2019 Champions, Kevin Keane and Lena Cappoccia of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, shot a 66! This was quite amazing considering the format is alternate shot and the layout of the course provided challenges with penalty areas on every hole. They had seven birdies and only one bogey in their round. Other winners in the Championship Division: Timmy Golden of Columbia CC and Kelly Calkin with the MSGA eClub had another under par score of 69 – they had a terrific front nine score of 32 with two birdies and an eagle. The third place gross winners were the husband and wife team of Jane and Philip Curtin of Argyle CC. They shot an even par 72. The net winners in first place were Karen Crowley and Danny Palumbo of Greystone Golf Course with a great score of 66 followed closely by Mark Brockway and Jennifer Kitchen of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm with a 67 and Kimbra Benson and Cody Jameson of Breton Bay Golf & CC with a score of 68.
The Senior Division, with almost twice the number of players, was closely contested. No more than four strokes separated the five-place gross winners and five-place net winners. There were several match of cards in order to determine who received prizes.
First place gross went to Mark Hall of Mount Pleasant Golf Club and Margie Knight of Green Hill CC with a score of 79. A close second place with an 80 was won by Liem and Than Campbell of the US Naval Academy. Tal and Sue Daley of the MSGA eClub won a match of cards for third with an 81. Marlies Empey of Oak Creek and Mike Lepore of Crofton won fourth low gross also with an 81. Rounding out fifth place gross was the team of Mary and Lee Newcomb of Talbot CC with an 83. The net winners were as follows: the first place winners, who also shot 79 gross, were Bill Barrett and Carol Mattingly of the Golf Club at South River with a 66. They were followed closely by Jim and Erin Gillespie of Chester River Yacht & CC with a 68 and Chris and Cathy Doerrer of the CC at Woodmore with a 69. Winning the match of cards for fourth place net with a score of 70 were Duncan and Mickie Frazer of the Cannon Club. David James of Mountain Branch Golf Course and Barbara Spedalire of Greystone Golf Course completed the net winners with a 70.
