The teams of James Muck-Rick Cross and Chris Minar-James Vaughn, competing in the men’s back and forward tee divisions respectively, found their names at the top of the leaderboard at a One-Day Chapman tournament conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association on Monday, July 1 at Montgomery CC in Laytonsville. Both teams’ gross scores were also good enough for the low net rounds of the day in their respective divisions, earning them the low net prizes for the event.
Muck, an eClub member, and Cross, Rattlewood GC, drew the second-to-last starting time at 9:58 on hole 10, played the back nine (their first nine) at 2-under. Their only setback was a bogey on the 411-yard fifteenth, after back-to-back birdies at hole nos. 13 and 14. On the front nine, they played bogey-free with a lone birdie on the 172-yard, par 3 sixth (their fifteenth hole) to finish with a gross total of 70 (-2) and a net score of 62.
With Muck-Cross earning the low net prize, Argyle CC members Eric Howell and Joe Petrucci won low gross posting 35-38—73. Starting on hole 10, their roller-coaster first nine included two double-bogeys and two birdies from hole nos. 13 through 18, but they found some consistency on the front nine. Their seven pars in a row were rewarded by a birdie at the par 4 eighth and another par at the ninth to finish the side bogey-free.
Minar and Vaughn, both members of the host club, were out in the first group on the first hole at 8:30. Their birdies on hole nos. 6 and 17 were offset by a bogey on each nine, which still resulted in an impressive even- par score of 72 in the challenging, modified version of alternate shot.
In the mixed division, Caroline Barbeau-Nick Krafft teamed up to earn the low gross prize with 37-40—77. Starting on the first hole, they offset two bogeys on the front nine with a birdie at the par 5 ninth hole for a 1-over 37. The back nine was more challenging for them, but their 5-over score was still two shots better than the nearest gross score.
Minar and Vaughn’s next closest competitors in the men’s forward division were Kevin Lee and Kevin Smith, University of MD GC. With a 1-over par round of 73, their card looked quite similar to Minar and Vaughn’s with one additional bogey on the front nine. Minar and Vaughn earned the low net prize, leaving the low gross prize to the Lee-Smith pairing.
Second place in the net competition of the men’s forward tee division was a tie at 67 between Steve Katz (Clustered Spires)-Alex Wang (MSGA eClub) and Tim Kowalchick (Montgomery CC)-Len Moyer (Hobbit’s Glen GC). Kowalchick and Moyer’s gross total of 78 was enough to earn the prize for second place in the gross competition, leaving Katz-Wang with the second place net prize.
The Committee for MSGA One-Day tournaments uses the USGA recommended method for breaking ties when a playoff is not feasible. This method uses a match of cards for scores from the back nine. If there is still a tie, it goes to the last six, last three, and finally the eighteenth hole
In the men’s back tee divison, the prize for second place in the gross competition was a tie at 75 between the father-son team of Michael (MSGA eClub) and Nicholas (Youth on Course-MSGA) Charlow and Kent Kamenicky (White Plains GC)-Mike Underwood (National GC at Tantallon). The Charlows back nine score of 36 won the tiebreaker over Kamenicky-Underwood’s 39.
The prize for third place in the net competition of the men’s back tee division also came down to a tiebreaker at 66 between Christian Rautenstrauch-Max Rosenberg (CC at Woodmore) and Paul Barsotti-Ed Simon (Cattail Creek). Rautenstrach-Rosenberg’s net score of 31 on the back nine won the tiebreaker over Barsotti-Simon’s 34.
The net competition in the mixed division was a tie at 66 between Norbeck CC members Claudia & John Craig and eClub members Sue & Talbot Daley. The Craig’s net score of 35 on the back nine was one shot better than the Daley’s 36.
The format for the 40 teams was Chapman, a format that is also referred to as Pinehurst. In a Chapman, golfers compete in teams of two. Both partners play from the teeing ground and play the partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, the partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play the ball alternately to complete the hole.
The next One-Day tournament will be a four-ball format with stableford scoring hosted by GC at South River in Edgewater on Monday, August 19.
