The teams of Ron Thomas and Andrew Turgeon and Mike and Ray Wankmiller, paired together while playing from the Back tees (6,226 yards; par 35-35–70), proved to be worthy challengers in the gross and net divisions of a Maryland State Golf Association One-Day event at the Suburban Club, May 6.

At the finish, they divided the spoils of their five-team field, as Thomas-Turgeon, from Old South CC, took low gross with 33-33–66, and the Wankmillers, Mike from the MSGA E-Club, and Ray from the Links at Lighthouse Sound, collected low net with 28-33–61. Each also placed second in the opposite category, as Thomas-Turgeon had a net 63 and the Wankmillers, a gross of 67.

The gross winners highlighted their round, played in the Chapman/Pinehurst (alternate shot) format, with an eagle-3 at the ninth, which they played at 516 yards. They also had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and two birdies on the back. The Wankmillers had four natural birdies and used their three net strokes for birdies in dipping 7 under par on the front, then eagled (with a stroke) the par-4 15th (404 yards) to go with a birdie at 10; a birdie (with a stroke) at the 12th, and two bogeys (one with a stroke) on the back.

Playing from the Forward tees (5,712 yards), Doug Airel, from Montgomery CC, and Bob King, Baltimore Duffers, won low net with 32-30–62. Harold Pellerite and Gary Rivers, from Montgomery CC, matched Airel-King with 32-30–62. The committee broke the tie using the USGA recommended method, with Airel-King winning with a back nine score of 30. Pellerite-Rivers settled for a gross prize, as they also placed first in the gross competition with 35-36–71.

From a field of 12, there were also runner-up prizes, and Donald Meyer-Dale Williams, Montgomery CC, got second gross with 31-36–77, while Tom Duvall and Nicholas Krafft, from Bretton Woods Recreation Center, earned second net with 33-30–63. The latter pair had a natural birdie and four with strokes on the opening nine, then closed with a natural birdie and three with strokes, plus a bogey

The remaining three teams were combined into one division with one net winner. The nod went to Lewis and Sue Shipp, Hobbits Glen GC, with 36-32–68.

The next One-Day event will be June 10th with a Four-Ball format at Lakewood CC.
