The Maryland State Golf Association-Women’s Division conducted a U.S. Women’s Mid-Am qualifier on Monday, August 20th at Eagle’s Nest Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland. Eight players competed for three spots in the national championship at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri on September 22-27, 2018. Eagle’s Nest was setup at just under 6,000 yards and a par of 72.
Clare Connolly, from Chevy Chase, Maryland was the medalist at the qualifier after firing a four-under-par 68. Clare’s round included six birdies and two bogeys. This was Connolly’s first opportunity to qualify for the Mid-Am, having turned 25 last November. The U.S. Women’s Mid-Am Championship will be Connolly’s second USGA Championship of 2018, having just returned from the U.S. Women’s Amateur at The Golf Club of Tennessee in early August.
Two other women qualified for Norwood Hills including Callie Kemmer (77) of Washington, D.C. and Deborah Williams (79) of Potomac, Maryland. Kemmer, a graduate of Yale and member of their women’s golf team, had a steady round with fourteen pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey. Kemmer, who works as a consultant at Deloitte, competed in the 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid-Am, but missed the cut by two strokes and has also competed in two U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championships. Williams, a member of Congressional Country Club and a three-time runner-up in the Maryland Women’s Amateur, had a round that included birdies on holes 3 and 4, five bogeys, and two double-bogeys.
