Ron Thomas, from Old South Country Club, and David Reynolds, University of Maryland GC, combined for 39-37–76 and won the low gross in a Maryland State Golf Association One-Day event at Rolling Road GC, May 7.
The round was 18 holes of stroke play using the Chapman/Pinehurst scoring system. It is a modified alternate-shot format where both partners play from the teeing ground and play the partner’s ball for the second shot. At this point, the partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play the ball alternately to complete the hole. For handicapping purposes, the lower handicap player uses 60% of his/her course handicap, while the higher handicap player uses 40% of his/her course handicap.
Thomas-Reynolds, who had posted a 3-over-par 75 at CC at Woodmore in the season’s opening one-day better-ball event, handled the alternate shot program almost as well, as they teamed for two birdies, six bogeys, and one double-bogey (the 410-yard eighth). Playing from the back tees (6,117 yards), they slipped only 2-over in the last 10 holes on the tight par-70 course.
Al Montgomery, from Wicomico Shores GC, and Phillip Moseley, MSGA eClub, earned low net in a group of seven teams with 74-11-63, a tour that included two net birdies on the front (33) and five net birdies, a net eagle at the 576-yard 12th, and two bogeys (the par-3 10th and 15th) on the back (30).
Second gross went to Scott Murdock-Jonathan Smith, both of whom registered via MSGA eClub, who finished with 40-40–80. They included two natural birdies on each nine. The Timbers at Troy members Dan Fyffe and Chuck Haertig, whose round included a net eagle at the 554-yard 11th, took second net with 79-11-68.
First and second gross for those playing from the forward tees (11 teams and 5,546 yards) came from the same pairing, as Bruce Brengle-Tom Raphael (pictured above right), The Timbers at Troy, returned 36-39–75, and Tony Errera, Turf Valley Resort-Michael Myirski, Aberdeen GC, recorded 76-7-69
Sue and Talbot Daley (pictured above left) posted a 82-15-67, which was good enough for 1st Net in the Mixed Division.
