Jeff Braswell sparked his round with three natural birdies and Brian Picker checked in with two natural and one net birdie, and the Turf Valley Country Club pairing went on to finish 33-32–65 to capture low net among those playing from the back tees in the year’s first Maryland State Golf Association One-Day tournament at the CC at Woodmore, April 23.
Playing companions Douglas Bower, DC Area #149, and Thomas Shapiro, MSGA eClub, collected low gross in a match of cards. The winners had four birdies in a round of 33-35-68, while Al Adana, from Redgate GC, and David Dustin, University of Maryland GC, had 32-36–68. Their tour included two birdies apiece on the front nine and all pars on the back.
Troy Fitzgerald-Josh Notes, from Hobbit’s Glen GC, also shot 68 gross, but their 33-34–67 brought home second net.
It took a match of cards to sort out the top places in the gross and net divisions among those playing from the forward tees. Marco DePalma-Donald Fitzgerald, from Hobbit’s Glen GC, registered low gross with 37-36–73, followed by Barry Andrews-Craig Whitaker, from the U.S. Naval Academy GC, 35-38–73. Three teams were carded off for low net at 62: Bob King-Lou Stewart, from the Baltimore Duffers, won low with 31-31–62, followed by Richard Phillips-Paul Sliwka, Lambda Links, 28-34–62. Losing out were the University of Maryland GC’s Chris Breslin-Robert Goebeler, Sr., 28-34–62. Stewart’s round included two eagles, as he birdied the ninth and the 15th, each with a stroke. The 163-yard ninth also yielded a 1 to Breslin after the two had totaled six birdies with a stroke each on the first eight holes. Phillips-Sliwka also had six net birdies and a 1 at the ninth for their front-nine 28.
For the women, Joann Moreland, Enterprise GC, and Susan Wagner, Oak Creek Club, took low gross with 84, and Marty Cumming, Redgate GC, and Dorothy Filbert, Blue Mash GC, picked up low net with 86-23-63. The only mixed pairing was Cheryl-George Suh, Timbers at Troy, 79-12-67.
