Hello! My name is Brett Gold and I am the 2018 P.J. Boatwright Intern for the MSGA. I am from Clarksville, Maryland and I am completing my undergraduate studies at Towson University this spring. I am studying Sport Management as well as minoring in Business Administration. I attended River Hill High School in Howard County where I played both golf and baseball. At Towson I am a member of the Club Golf Team which gives me the opportunity to continue playing competitive golf, something I love. I really enjoy the game of golf and love being around it whether it is playing or working. I have one brother, he is a freshman on the Towson University Golf team. Both him and my dad love playing golf and we play together every chance we get. I am looking forward to my work with the MSGA this season and I am excited about what I can bring to this wonderful organization.
How did you hear about the internship with the MSGA?
I found the PJ Boatwright internship through the position posting on the MSGA website. It caught my interest and I decided to apply.
Why were you interested in an internship with the MSGA?
Beyond the fact that I love golf and have been around the game much of my life, the golf industry is a place where I would love to make a career and when I saw this opportunity I thought it was something that I would be very interested in as well as help me to reach my career goals.
What is your favorite golf course in the area?
Growing up I did not belong to a country club in the area, therefore my Dad would take my brother and I to courses all around the area. I would say my favorite course is Bulle Rock, I enjoy the challenge that the course has to offer along with the spectacular layout.
When did you start playing golf? Who got you into the game?
I have been playing golf for as long as I can remember, both my dad and my grandfather have played golf for a long time and their influence has made me in to the golf fanatic that I am. I was given my first set of real clubs for my 5th birthday and it is a moment I will never forget. Also due to my brothers love for the game, we are always able to compete and help improve each others game.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I am not working I love to be out on the golf course with my family or friends. I am a big Baltimore Sports fan and I love going to Orioles games at Camden Yards throughout the summer. I also enjoy going on vacation, often with golf as the main attraction.
What is a fun fact we don’t know about you?
This past summer I went on vacation to Aruba and had the opportunity to play Tierra del Sol, the only 18-hole golf course on the entire island. The course was a lot of fun to play and was a very unique golf experience.
About the USGA Boatwright Internship:
In 1991, the USGA established the P.J. Boatwright Internship program, which is designed to give experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration. The internship also assists state and regional golf associations in the promotion of amateur golf. The MSGA is granted a seven month intern, who will work from April through November. The MSGA’s intern helps conduct tournaments, membership services, handicapping, course rating, website administration and other activities to support golf in Maryland.
