The Maryland State Golf Association- Women’s Division will conduct the 96th Women’s Amateur Championship from Tuesday, July 18 to Friday, July 21 at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix. The Championship begins with an
optional 18-hole stroke play qualifying round for the Championship Flight. The low 16 players form the Championship flight and will be seeded by their qualifying round score. All players who do not qualify for the Championship Flight are divided into flights of eight players and seeded according to their most current handicap indexes. Match play begins on Wednesday. Those defeated in the first match of the Championship flight will form the First Flight. Final matches for all flights will be on Friday. The qualifying round will play 5,786 yards as well as the Championship to Fourth Flights. The Fifth Flight will play 5,150 yards.
Hillendale Country Club’s golf course is known as a “traditional gem” with its rolling hills and small, undulating, well-bunkered greens. Hillendale is rated as one of the most challenging golf courses in the greater Baltimore area. This William and David Gordon signature design masterpiece, built in 1954, pays respect to the timeless architecture of the game of golf. Hillendale is always making improvements to the course; in the 1970’s George Fazio was hired and fairway bunkers were added.
Defending champion Bryana Nguyen, from Hobbit’s Glen, will compete to defend her title in the Amateur Championship. As the defending champion, Bryana earned the #1 seed in the Championship flight. Bryana was also runner-up in the 2014 Amateur Championship and a 2014 Junior Girls champion. A senior in the fall at the University of North Carolina, Bryana has played in every tournament the Tar Heels have competed in since she joined the team. The 2016 runner-up, Mackenzie Rice, will also be in the field this year to compete for the title. The Canada native will be a senior at Towson University in the fall where she competes for their golf team.
Other notable players in this year’s Women’s Amateur field include three-time past champion (1994,199,2012) Andrea Kraus, and two-time runner-up Lisa Schlesinger. Kraus also recently won the Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur championship for the third year (2012,2013, 2017). Lisa Schlesinger is a four-time Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion as well as the 2013 Maryland Senior Champion. Connie Isler will also be competing in the field again this year after winning the Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur in 2015 and coming in second place in 2016. Kimbra Benson, a two-time Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion (2009, 2010) will also be vying for the trophy. There are several collegiate golfers in addition to Bryana Nguyen and Mackenzie Rice in the field including Josephine Jung (Towson, sophomore), Arisa Kimura (NYU, sophomore), Samyra Lewis (Delaware State, senior), Delaney Shah (Louisville, sophomore), and Micaa Thomas (SCAD, junior).
The Maryland Women’s Amateur is open to female amateur golfers that are members of MSGA member clubs with a handicap index of 30.0 or less as of June 1, 2017.
