The teams of Evan Santa-Kyle McCullough, John Rogers-Thomas Hutcheson, and Michelle Proser-Willy Bhatia were atop the leaderboard following a One-Day Four-Ball tournament conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association on Tuesday, June 4, at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Maryland.
The duo of Evan Santa and Kyle McCullough posted a team gross score of 68 (-4) for the men’s back division and won first place gross with five birdies. Charles Young and Jason Bonardi finished in second place gross, with a score of 71 (-1). Justin Watson and Matthew Whaley won a scorecard playoff against Jason Basara and Michael Boushell for first place net in the men’s back division. Both teams shot 67 (-5). Jacob Seiter and Tommy Vyskocil earned third place net with a score of 68 (-4).
The Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course duo of John Rogers and Thomas Hutcheson were able to post a net score of 65 (-7) to win 1st place net in the men’s forward division. They won a scorecard playoff by three strokes against John Scott and Keith Peddicord. Dave Ravadge and Mark Robey posted a net score of 66 (-6) and won 3rd place. With Rogers and Hutcheson winning first place net, Barry Schwartz and Michael Mulford from Compass Pointe GC won first place gross in the men’s forward division with a score of 72 (E). John Torre and Matthew Mathias finished in second place gross. Rounding out the top three in the men’s forward gross division was the duo from the United States Naval Academy Golf Club, Barry Andrews and Craig Whitaker.
In the mixed division, Michelle Proser and Willy Bhatia earned both low gross and net, but with teams only eligible to win one prize, they finished first in the net division with a score of 62 (-10). Stephanie Ordakowski and Eric Beaufait finished second in the mixed gross division with a score of 73(+1).
The format for the 42 teams was Four-Ball stroke play, often referred to as better ball. In Four-Ball, Competitors play as partners, each playing their own ball. The lower score for the partners is the score for the hole. If a player is confident that their score will not count on a particular hole, they are not required to finish the hole, but one team member must hole out. The committee for MSGA One-Day tournaments uses the USGA recommended method for breaking ties when a playoff is not feasible, as outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf.
