The Maryland State Golf Association will conduct the 96th Maryland Open Championship from Monday July 10 to Wednesday July 12 at Woodholme Country Club in Pikesville. The format is 54 holes of stroke play, with all players playing 36 holes and a cut to the low 40 scorers and ties for the final round. The professional purse is approximately $45,000. The perpetual silver trophy will be engraved with the champion’s name, and the low amateur’s name will also be engraved onto the Harry Pitt Trophy.

Woodholme was designed in 1927 by Herbert Strong, one of the pillars of the era known as the “Golden Age” of golf course architecture. Typical of Strong’s designs, the course was built over natural terrain with very little earth moved. The course features small, pitched greens, deep green side bunkers, and undulating fairways where a flat lie is hard to find. Here, Strong also found significant elevation changes as well. The course has seven water crossings, features five par 5’s, and plays to an uncommon par 73. It has a reputation for being impeccably maintained, solidifying it as a true hidden gem.

Defending champion Sean Bosdosh will compete to defend his title in the Open Championship. Bosdosh also won the Open in 2012 as an amateur. A 2015 graduate of the University of Maryland, Sean holds the second lowest career scoring average in Terps history at 73.05, and the second lowest season scoring average in history at 72.08. The low amateur and winner of the Harry Pit Trophy, Davis Lamb will also be in the field again this year to defend his title. The Potomac native will be a Sophomore at Notre Dame in the fall. As a freshman he competed in eight tournaments for the Fighting Irish and had a strong showing at his first ACC Conference championships.

There are a number of past champions and runners-up in this year’s field, like three-time Maryland Open winner Wayne DeFrancesco (2005, 1995, 1994). 2011 champion David Hutsell, Timonium, and 2014 champion Patrick McCormick, North Bethesda, will also compete for the title. Other notable players include four-time runner-up Dirk Schultz of Hagerstown, 2008 runners-up Jim Estes and Eric Egloff, 2012 Maryland Amateur champion, Josh Eure, and 2015 amateur champion Ben Warnquist.

44 of the 135 competitors were exempt from qualifying, while 91 players from the four qualifying sites filled the remaining spots. On May 2 at Mountain Branch GC, Brian Thomas shot a 68 on an extremely windy day. At the qualifier hosted by Worthington Manor on May 8, Ford Bennett, Green Spring Valley HC, shot 70, which was enough to earn him medalist honors in the amateur and open qualifier. Tony Bostic, Northwest GC, shot a 6-under-par 66 at the qualifier at CC at Woodmore on May 18. This matches a 66 by Connor Flach (also competing in the Open) in a qualifier two years ago, which makes them the two lowest qualifying scores in more than 20 years. In the final qualifier at Queesntown Harbor on May 24, Brendan Peel, Will Koras, and Ryan Crabtree all turned in a 71 to tie for first place and qualify them for The Open.

The Maryland Open is open to male amateur members of MSGA member clubs with a handicap index of 7.1 or less; to male professionals who are Middle Atlantic PGA members or registered apprentices; to male professionals employed by member clubs; and to male professionals who are residents of Maryland.

Pairings, starting times and scoring are available here.
