The Maryland State Golf Association will conduct the 18th Maryland Senior Open Championship from Tuesday October 10 to Wednesday October 11 at the Chevy Chase Club in Chevy Chase, MD. The competition will be 36 holes of stroke play with Senior (50 and over) and Super Senior (60 and over) age categories. The course will play to a par of 70 for the Championship. The professional purse is approximately $13,000 along with prizes for amateur champions.
The beautiful Chevy Chase Club golf course is a Donald Ross, Charles Alison, & Arthur Hills design. Originally founded in 1892, Chevy Chase has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. The Club hosted the 1908 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship and the second Curtis Cup in 1934. It is one of Maryland’s finest courses from quality of holes to its excellent condition. There are only two par 5’s on the course, but the variety and difficulty of the par 4’s will be sure to challenge even the best players.
Defending champion Dirk Schultz, from Beaver Creek Country Club, will compete to defend his title in the Senior Open Championship. In the 2016 Senior Open, Schultz shot a low 69 in the second round to win by 2 strokes over Joe Lefavor and Ricky Touma. Both Lefavor and Touma will be competing in the field again this year with hopes of winning the title. Schultz also competed in the 2017 Maryland Open at
Woodholme CC where he finished tied for 8th. David Nocar Jr., will also be competing in this year’s Senior Open after just recently winning the 2017 Maryland Senior Amateur Championship. Nocar was also a 2017 U.S. Senior Amateur quarterfinalist at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis back in August.
Other notable players to watch in this year’s field include, Terry Burke (2014 Runner-Up), Steve Comings (2017 Mixed Two-Ball Champion), Tom Grem (2017 Father-Son Champion, 2016 Senior Amateur Champion), Craig Ostrom (2017 Senior Amateur Runner-Up), Jim Castagna (2006 Senior Open Champion), Lee Flemister (2014 Senior Open Runner-Up, T5 at 2017 Senior Amateur), and Burke Hayes (2003 Senior Open Champion).
The Maryland Senior Open is open to male amateur members of the Maryland State Golf Association with up-to-date USGA Indexes of 8.4 or less; to male professionals who are Middle Atlantic PGA members or registered apprentices; to male professionals employed by member clubs; and to male professionals who are residents of Maryland.
