Overall Winner and Champion Kimbra Benson from Breton Bay Golf & CC

Kimbra Benson used the day's best score, an 80, to nail down a victory in the third annual Women's Mid-Amateur championship, sponsored and conducted by the Women's Division of the Maryland State Golf Association, at the Country Club of Maryland in Towson, May 19. She finished the weather-marred two-day event with 81-80--161.

Lisa Schlesinger, from Norbeck Country Club, winner of the first two WD Mid-Am titles, improved with an 81 to claim second place on 83-81--164 Deb Pearson, also from Norbeck, climbed into third place with 85-82--167 in the 35-player field. Both players were members of Norbeck's winning team in the recent MSGA-WD Team Matches, as the Rockville entry outlasted Congressional Country Club on the third playoff hole.

Rain forced a 90-minute suspension of play in the opening round and coupled with 50-degree weather, produced some higher than usual scores. The second round was played in dry and warmer weather, but it was overcast and windy. Par was 37-35 over a well-conditioned 5,481 yards.

"I felt like I played much better than I scored," Benson said of her low round. "I just hit it so much better. However, the greens were tough and I often ended up on the wrong tier." leading to a three-putt and a four-putt. A United States Army veteran, Benson collected eight Women's All-Army titles and six Women's Armed Forces championships while in the service. More recently, she was a losing semifinalist (to Schlesinger) in the WD Women's Amateur two years ago.

For the final round, Benson and Schlesinger were followed by three at 82 -- Deb Pearson, Argyle Country Club, 36 (with two birdies)-46--82; Stacey Collins, Chestnut Ridge Country Club, and Bernadette Carroll, Maryland Golf & Country Club.

April Giles, from The Timbers at Troy, who has a 26 handicap, earned the low net with 67-68--135. Carroll, with an 18 handicap, improved from 92 to 82, her low round of the year, to finish 74-64--138.
