Rolling Road and Beaver Creek Advance to Finals of Team Championship
Matt Bassler birdied the 16th hole to clinch the match and lift Rolling Road Golf Club to a 9 ½ - 8 ½
victory over Baltimore Country Club in the Baltimore area final of the 83rd Team Matches of the Maryland State Golf Association, April 29. Beaver Creek CC advanced in the Washington half of the draw, piling up 8 ½ points at home en route to a 12 ½ - 5 ½ triumph over the defending champion University of Maryland Golf Club. Rolling Road will be the home team for the championship program, May 5.
Bassler’s birdie gave him and partner Chris Derby a 3-up margin and, coupled with a point for the front nine, enough for the win, 2 points to 1. Concession of the last two holes gave BCC its point. Rolling Road did much of its damage on the front nine, as the pairing of Joe Fields-Kevin Allis turned 2 up; Mike Mulieri-Ryan Fields, 1 up, and Bassler-Derby, 1 up. At BCC, Rolling Road ended with a 6-3 edge.
The three matches at Rolling Road, which finished about an hour ahead of the play at BCC, saw the latter side forge a 3 ½ - 2 ½ margin. Moose Brown-Andy Pataki led Rolling Road with a 3-0 sweep, helped in part by a 20-foot birdie by Pataki to win the front nine, while Brett Williams-Tim Dilli earned a 3-0 decision for Baltimore. They never trailed, winning the front 1 up and the back, 2 up. The other pairing, saw amateur Bob Kaestner drop a 12-foot putt on the 18th green to secure a ½ point in a 2 1/2 – ½ win with pro Joe Plecker against RR’s Steve Papanek-Rick Sovero.
At Beaver Creek, Randy Barnes-Greg Henry got three points and pro Dirk Schultz-amateur Tim Steiner and Chuck Thatcher-A.J. Edmondson each got 2 ½ points. At College Park, Steve Ligi-Finley Benjamin set the pace with a 3-0 victory.
